Background

SLC34A2, also known as Sodium-dependent phosphate transport protein 2B, is highly expressed in the lung. It is also detected in the pancreas, kidney, small intestine, ovary, testis, prostate, and mammary gland. In the lung, it is primarily found in alveolar type II cells and not in bronchiolar epithelium. This protein may play a role in actively transporting phosphate into cells through Na+ cotransport. Additionally, it is believed to be the primary phosphate transport protein in the intestinal brush border membrane. Furthermore, it may have a role in the synthesis of surfactant in the alveoli of the lungs.
